To be accepted into our program, volunteers must complete an online training prior to starting with the therapeutic horticulture program. Most of the training is offered via Canvas, UF’s online learning platform. The training covers the basics of therapeutic horticulture, describes the characteristics of special populations, discusses adaptive gardening and more. Training includes hands-on components in the greenhouse as well as lectures, readings and quizzes.
By enrolling in the volunteer training, you are expected to commit to at least one session per week for the duration of the semester. Sessions are offered Tuesday through Thursday at various times throughout the day. We understand that occasional absences may be unavoidable, but volunteers should plan to attend consistently. Relationship-building and community are important components of therapeutic horticulture, and volunteer consistency helps participants feel comfortable, supported, and connected.
Depending on the group, sessions last either 60 or 90 minutes. Volunteers must arrive 15 minutes before the session to help prepare, and remain for 15 minutes after the session to assist with cleanup and provide feedback.
