Settles Lab

Outreach

Here at the Settles Lab, we love to participate in science outreach! Below are some examples of the outreach work we have done in the past. If you are interested in participating in outreach with our lab, please use the contact form below to reach out to us. We look forward to hearing from you!

University of Florida/Santa Fe
Undergraduate Research Experience

Our lab routinely trains undergraduate students interested in gaining experience in a scientific laboratory. Undergraduates who have worked in our lab have gone on to graduate with honors and/or enter graduate school. We have experience working with McNair Scholars and students enrolled in federal work-study programs. If you are an undergraduate student at UF or Santa Fe interested in plant biology, plant genetics, or any of the Research done in our lab we would love to hear from you! Please use the contact form below to reach out to us.

For example, Anadaisy Aguirre (pictured to the right) currently works in the Settles Lab. She is learning the basics of genetic mapping and is also involved with the maintenance of our space algae lines. Anadaisy is an undergraduate student at UF majoring in Biology with a minor in Innovation, and she is a McNair Scholar.

Florida A&M University
Undergraduate Research Experience

Every summer, we host students from Florida A&M University (FAMU) for summer research projects on molecular biology and maize genetics. These summer internships are part of a long-term collaboration between Dr. Settles and Dr. Gokhan Hacisalihoglu at FAMU. The program has trained a total of 18 minority undergraduate students, many of whom continued on into STEM graduate programs. If you are an undergraduate student at FAMU and are interested in this program, please reach out to us using the contact form to the right.

General Science Outreach Examples

  • Our lab is currently involved in assisting a team of young students at the Milton Hershey School to complete a spaceflight experiment in collaboration with NASA. This team of young scientists worked with Dr. Settles to write a proposal to obtain NASA funds for an experiment involving growing algae in space on the International Space Station. One of our lab’s graduate students, Hope Hersh, is currently assisting the team with analysis of the results.
  • Dr. Settles has also helped several teams of budding student scientists prepare projects for the FIRST LEGO League Challenge competition
