Dr. Alfred Huo

Dr. Heqiang “Alfred” Huo is an associate professor of ornamental plant breeding in the Department of Horticultural Sciences at the University of Florida. Huo is a geneticist with a passion for the horticultural industry and exploring plants at a molecular level. Huo’s research focuses on using a comprehensive approach to understand and improve the genetics of ornamental and specialty crops, incorporating genetics, genomics, molecular biology and biotechnology. His research specifically focuses on how plant genetics interact with environmental factors, such as temperature, drought, salinity and light, and how their interaction impacts plant growth. Huo’s research program encompasses a wide variety of high-value horticultural crops, including lettuce, hops, tobacco, tomato, begonia, snapdragon and petunia.
In addition, Dr. Huo serves as the Lead of the Plant Transformation Team for the Crop Transformation Center Program, where he oversees innovative transformation technologies and collaborative research initiatives aimed at accelerating crop improvement through integrated approaches in genetics, genomics, molecular biology, and biotechnology.
